[Bangladesh] 29,369 Jobs Lost Since Eid

14 JUL 2020

A total of 29,369 workers - primarily in the garment sector - have lost their jobs since Eid at the end of May because factory owners, citing a drop in orders since the COVID-19 crisis, have adopted cost-cutting measures. Industrial police data shows that as of July 9 29,369 jobs had been lost across 165 industrial units in the six industrial zones under its jurisdiction.

The exact number of laid-off workers would be 3 times higher than the official figures suggest, according to labour leaders. This is due to a high number of owners being forced to leave jobs of their own accord and of many factories lying outside the jurisdiction of the industrial police. New Age examines the data more closely and provides responses from economists and industry experts.
