[Ireland] Government Approval Secured For Legislation Extending Access To Social Insurance Benefits

17 JUL 2020

On July 13 Social Protection Minister, Heather Humphreys TD, secured Government approval to introduce a new Bill, which will make sure that PRSI contributions are attributed to people in receipt of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment or those whose salaries are supported by the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme.

This primary legislation, once enacted, will ensure that workers who lost their jobs, or were temporarily laid-off, during the COVID-19 pandemic are credited with full or ‘paid’ PRSI contributions on their social insurance record; equivalent to the contributions they would have made if they continued in employment. Meaning that people who lost their jobs on account of the public health crisis will not lose access to social insurance benefits. Gov.ie has a full statement from the Minister.
