[Kuwait] Government ministries begin to lay off foreign workers

7 AUG 2020

According to an August 4 report by Al-Rai newspaper, several Kuwaiti government ministries have begun laying off expatriate workers. The report said that the ministries will ultimately dismiss 50 per cent of foreign employees, with subcontractors and those who work in non-technical fields at particular risk of job losses.

A source reportedly told Al-Rai that the process of letting expatriates working in governmental agencies go will be gradual and with advance notice so their work is not affected. The dismissal process is expected to take 3 months but employees hired directly by the ministries have apparently been redeployed to companies providing subcontracted services already. Arab News reports on the layoffs and the wider motivation behind them.
