[UK] Claiming Back Student Loan Repayments For Teachers

On the 3rd of December 2019, HMRC updated their gov.uk page giving details about how some teachers can claim back the student loan repayments made while employed as a teacher in the 2018 to 2019 financial year.

The update was to change the following text “‘you can claim if you spend less than 50% of your contracted hours on leadership duties’” to “you can claim if you spent at least 50% of your contracted hours teaching one or more eligible subjects”.

Whilst claiming back is an individual’s responsibility, it is good that employers have this information in case they are asked.  Also, the applicant will need the exact amount student loan repayments while employed as a teacher during the 2018 to 2019 financial year, something that they should be able to get from their P60 or payslips.  But, experience tells us that applicants will often contact their payroll department rather than search out these documents.
