[UK] Self-isolating Greencore workers faced pay cut

17 AUG 2020

Representatives have claimed that staff at a Northampton-based Greencore sandwich factory at the centre of a coronavirus outbreak were told they would be paid less than £100 (€111) a week if they had to self-isolate, making it challenging for many to comply. The claim follows news emerging last week that 292 workers at the site had tested positive for COVID-19. (Links via original reporting)

Bosses at the Greencore site - which prepares M&S sandwiches - acknowledged that many staff would be entitled to no more than the £95.85 (€106) statutory sick pay rate if they followed self-isolation instructions. Greencore said it had made the decision to proactively test staff following a spike in cases in the east midlands town. The Irish Times reports the story and the response of the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union.
