[US] Travel slump prompts American Airlines to lay off 17,500 employees

In July American Airlines announced that the steep decline in travel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic would force the company to lay off up to 25,000 pilots, flight attendants and other front-line workers this autumn. Voluntary employee exits and long-term leaves have allowed the final figure to be lower but 17,500 workers will still be losing their jobs.

This total is in addition to 1,500 management and administrative workers already laid off by the airline. On August 25 American Airlines CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom broke the news to their employees, reportedly calling it the most sobering update they have had to give since the beginning of the pandemic. USA Today reports on the layoffs and the one thing the company.
