How postmodern ERP can make your business better

A MidlandHR White Paper
Since the 1990s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have been promoted as the holy grail of enterprise software. Promising to drastically improve efficiencies across the business, ERP systems came to be the must-have solution for any large, modern organisation.
However, problems with traditional ERP systems and rapid changes in technology (particularly concerning mobile, social, big data and cloud computing) have led many organisations to supplement their single vendor ERP systems with additional specialist solutions to meet the demands of specific departments.
This has led to what Gartner has termed “postmodern ERP” – “a more federated, loosely coupled ERP environment with much (or even all) of the functionality sourced as cloud services or via business process outsourcers” (Gartner, 2013)1. In essence, this means organisations will increasingly combine a core ERP system supplemented by specialist, often cloud-based solutions for different departments or divisions. Gartner believes that “by 2018, more than 80% of organizations will be operating a hybrid ERP model with most of the people-centric applications deployed as cloud services.”
Businesses should consider how they can exploit this changing approach, reviewing how specialist solutions can be integrated with existing enterprise systems to reduce costs and improve competitive advantage.
